# Referrals

> Reward both the referrer and the new customer from the same points ledger.

Referrals in Habit use the same points ledger as purchases. You do not install a second app or pay a second fee.

## Set referral bonuses

In **Settings**, configure:

| Setting          | What it controls                                            |
| ---------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- |
| Referrer bonus   | Points the existing customer earns when a referral converts |
| Referee bonus    | Points the new customer earns for using a valid code        |
| Code expiry      | How many days an unused code stays valid                    |
| Max active codes | How many unused codes one customer can have at once         |

## How a referral converts

1. A customer shares their referral code from the storefront widget or account page.
2. A new customer applies the code.
3. When that order is paid, Habit credits both bonuses.

## Fraud protection

Habit rate-limits code generation, expires unused codes, and alerts you when referral volume looks abnormal. Tune **referral velocity** in Settings if you sell into a market that attracts coupon-site scraping.

This will not catch every case, but it stops the failure mode where thousands of codes leak overnight with no way to shut them off.
