Every Habit program shares one points ledger. Purchases, referrals, VIP multipliers, and manual adjustments all write to the same balance.

Earn on purchase

When an order is paid, Habit credits points using Points earned per $1 spent, applied to the order subtotal. Tax and shipping do not earn points. VIP multipliers apply on top of that rate. Example: if the rate is 1 point per 1andthesubtotalis1 and the subtotal is 48, the customer earns 48 points at the 1x base rate. The multiplier used is the customer’s current tier. If that order pushes them into a higher tier, the new multiplier starts on the next paid order. Points only post after the order is paid. Drafts, unpaid checkouts, and guest orders with no customer do not earn.

Redeem

Customers spend points as a discount. Conversion uses Points needed for $1 off, plus your minimum balance and max percent of the subtotal. Customers must be signed in to redeem, and can never redeem more than their balance. Checkout checks the balance itself, so editing the cart can’t unlock a bigger discount. Habit deducts only what the discount was actually worth. For example, if the cart shrinks after points are applied and the discount gets capped, the customer keeps the difference. They can redeem:
  • In the cart, on every Shopify plan
  • At checkout, on Shopify Plus
See storefront and checkout and checkout redemption.

Refunds

When items are refunded, Habit adjusts the ledger in proportion to the share of the order’s subtotal refunded so far:
  • Points earned on the order are clawed back. A full refund reverses the whole earn, and two 50% refunds add up to a full reversal.
  • Points spent on the order’s discount are returned to the customer.
  • On a full refund, referral bonuses the order triggered are reversed for both the referrer and the new customer.
Refunds of money only (no items), and shipping refunds, don’t change points. You do not need to adjust the ledger by hand. If those points were already spent, the balance can go negative until future purchases cover it. Habit does not delete later redemptions.

Points expiry

Optionally set Expire unused points after (days) in Settings. Unused points expire after that many days with no earn-on-order or redemption. The whole balance expires together — this is not oldest-points-first. Leave the field empty to keep points indefinitely. Referral bonuses and manual adjustments do not reset the expiry clock.

Manual adjustments

Open Customers in Habit, pick a member, and add or subtract points. A reason is required. Use a negative number to subtract. Manual adjustments appear in the member’s history as an adjustment. They change the balance immediately but do not count as purchase activity for expiry.
